Laurean Rugambwa Bwanakunu

Laurean Rugambwa Bwanakunu is a distinguished public administration specialist and humanitarian diplomacy leader with extensive experience in institutional management, legal compliance, and regional humanitarian coordination. He holds advanced professional qualifications in public management and organisational law, and is a Certified Director (Institute of Directors Tanzania)—internationally recognised certification in corporate governance.

Mr Bwanakunu currently serves as Africa Regional Head of Humanitarian Diplomacy for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), positioning him at the forefront of continental humanitarian response coordination and policy advocacy. In this capacity, he spearheads critical humanitarian initiatives addressing major regional challenges across East and Southern Africa, including mental health advocacy, refugee support systems, disaster risk management, and community resilience programming.

Previously, Mr Bwanakunu served as Director General of Medical Stores Department (MSD)—Tanzania’s principal pharmaceutical supply institution and one of the country’s largest supply-chain operations serving thousands of health facilities nationwide. During his tenure, he provided transformative strategic leadership through organisational restructuring, supply-chain optimisation, institutional capacity building, and quality assurance improvements.

He managed complex nationwide distribution networks serving public facilities, private practitioners, and rural health programmes, demonstrating mastery in large-scale public-sector operations. His experience managing Tanzania’s critical pharmaceutical supply system—ensuring reliable medicine availability nationwide whilst maintaining quality—built exceptional expertise in institutional governance, regulatory compliance, and public-sector execution under resource constraints.

Mr Bwanakunu brings expertise in institutional governance, regulatory compliance, and public-sector execution to AGCOT’s board. His supply-chain management experience applies to AGCOT’s operational scaling across dispersed corridors. His IFRC position strengthens AGCOT’s alignment with international humanitarian standards and inclusive development best practices, ensuring agricultural interventions consider vulnerable populations.
