CSA Phase II

Project Overview and Background

The Building Capacity for Resilient Food Security Program (BCfRFSP) in the United Republic of Tanzania was initiated to address capacity gaps within the country’s relevant entities including the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA), Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries (MLF), Zanzibar’s Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources, Livestock, and Fisheries (MANRLF), Tanzania Meteorological Agency (TMA), the President’s Office of Regional Administration and Local Government (PORALG) to respond effectively to the challenges faced by the country’s agricultural sector from climate change.

During the first four years of the BCfRFSP, IITA efforts went to the identification and demonstration of appropriate CSA practices and technologies to communities to achieve agricultural resilience. This included disseminating information to farmers on CSA through agricultural extension products and services, incorporating CSA into training programs for extension students and professionals taught by the Ministry’s Agricultural training institutes (MATI and KATI), developing tools and methods for providing extension agents and farmers with weather forecast information, and incorporating CSA into District development planning processes.

The project is made possible through the generous support of the USAID Feed the Future Program from the Mission based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

CSA Phase II

Phase II Concept

As part of phase 2 of the BCfRFSP, titled “Scaling Climate Smart Agriculture in Tanzania,” IITA and other CSA actors focused on scaling out the outputs and outcomes achieved during the first four years of the project as well as assess the longer-term sustainability impact of several phases 1 activity. This process included the identification of some challenges experienced during the first phase of the project and ensuring they are addressed and overcome in this phase 2. Scaling CSA in Tanzania phase II project was achieved through the following objectives:

  • i. Enhance farmer use and uptake of CSA practices and technologies,
  • ii. Improve extension services for CSA,
  • iii. Enhance utilization of CSA research findings from phase 1,
  • iv. Impact assessment of some activities of phase 1.

Theory of change (TOC) of Scaling Up CSA in Tanzania Project

Cultivating organic vegetables through eco-friendly farming and mindful stewardship.

Expected Outcome and Impact

  • i. 167 farmers (109 male and 58 female) from the Ihemi and Kilombero Clusters, including farmers from Wangama, Melela and Doma Villages and the Vijana Walima Vitunguu (VIWAVI) group in Ruaha Mbuyuni, were trained on entrepreneurship skills, the IGG Tool, and safe management of harmful agrochemical waste using the Kizimba Model,
  • ii. Six Kizimbas were constructed in Dumila, Melela, Wangama and Doma Villages, as well as at Itete Irrigation Scheme, providing practical demonstration models for the safe collection, handling and management of harmful agrochemical waste and promoting environmentally responsible farming practices,
  • iii. A borehole was constructed and a screenhouse installed at Raha Vegetable Farm in Dumila Village, supporting the demonstration and adoption of climate-smart agriculture practices, efficient water management, and Inclusive Green Growth approaches within the clusters,
  • iv. Through Mkulima kwa Mkulima initiatives a total of 588 farmers from Morogoro and Gairo District Councils were trained on farm record keeping, sustainable soil management, avocado nursery establishment and management, round potato production, and the importance of maintaining product quality to access and sustain favorable market prices. The initiative resulted to the establishment of Lukinga Farmers AMCOS, Kauli Njema Group, and Nguvu Mpya AMCOS, which are currently engaged in avocado and potato production in Gairo District Council,
  • v. 47 seedling producers (33 male and 14 female) from the Ihemi and Kilombero Clusters received training on TOSCI requirements and successfully obtained TOSCI certification. This has strengthened producers’ capacity to comply with seedling quality standards and improve the availability of quality planting materials to farmers,
  • vi. 8 acres of drip irrigation systems, including water storage tanks, were installed at demonstration sites across the Ihemi and Kilombero Clusters (3 acres at Wangama, 2 acres at Melela, and 3 acres at Vonkavy Agribusiness Limited). The demonstration sites provide practical models for efficient water management, improved productivity, and adoption of climate-smart irrigation technologies by farmers and agribusinesses,
